Mitochondria Flashcards
The mitochondria is the site for what?
cellular respiration and energy production
The mitochondria can also be a producer of
reactive oxygen species which can react with other components of the cell
Describe how the mitochodria looks and what it consists of
- double membrane structure
Consists of
-outer membrane
-outer membrane space
-Inner membrane (cristae)
-Matrix
each plays a role in cellular respiration
Cell respiration is what type of reaction?
oxidation and reduction reaction
Glucose vs oxygen, which is reduced or oxidized and what are the products
Glucose is oxidized to CO2
Oxygen is reduced to water
What happens to the energy releases by cellular respiration?
It is captured by ATP
After energy is captured by ATP, what is it then used for?
cellular metabolism
Mitochodria also plays a central role in
apoptosis (cell death)
How does the mitochondria play a role in apoptosis?
An increase in mitochondrial membrane
permeability causes the release of mitochondrial enzymes
Which organelle is the only one that has its own DNA
Mitochondria
mt-DNA
What are mitochondrial diseases?
A group of disorders caused by
dysfunctional mitochondria
Mitochondria are found in every cell of the human body except
red blood cells
Typically the disorders are caused by a mutation in the
mitochondrial DNA
What is the apoposis activating factor?
cytochrome C
Why do mitochondrial diseases often present with muscle weakness
and neuropathies?
These tissues present high energy demands. Any condition altering ATP production will cause them not to function properly
