Oxidation and Reduction - ES Flashcards
Oxidation is
loss of electrons (X⁻)
Reduction is
gaining of electrons (X⁺)
Where to the electrons go in half-equations
on the most positive side
What is an oxidising agent
it causes something to be oxidised (lose electrons) by gaining the electrons itself so it gets reduced
What is a reducing agent
it causes something to be reduced (gain electrons) by losing the electrons itself so it gets oxidised
Halide ions reducing/oxidising agent
they need to gain 1 electron to achieve noble gas configuration so they are oxidising agents
What is happening in terms of reducing/oxidising and agents in Cl₂ + 2I⁻ -> I₂ + 2Cl⁻
chlorine = reduced
iodide = oxidised
chlorine - oxidising agent
iodide = reducing agent
What happens up the group of the halogens in terms of oxidising agents
it increases so chlorine is the best oxidising agent and the more reactive halogen can oxidise the ions of a less reactive one
