Ortho X-rays Flashcards
Body parts that behave as water on xrays
muscles, ligaments, tendons
Determines density of bone
cortex
bone structure and stria can be seen. evident in repair process or reaction to tumor or infection
ossification
homogeneous and structureless. Seen in degeneration of bursa, tendons, or in metabolic disease
calcification
Part of bone where growth occurs and may have limited blood supply
epiphysis
Portion of the bone converted from cartilage until remodeled to diaphysis. Active metabolic area with formation of blood elements
metaphysis
Thick central portion of bone that serves as supporting structure
diaphysis
Type of growths seen in epiphysis and metaphysis
giant cell in epiphysis and bone cysts in metaphysis
Postero-anterior view with knee flexed to 50 degrees. Indicated for Osteochondritis Dissecans evaluation. Performed standing if possible
notch view
What are you worried about with a severe posterior knee dislocation?
neurovascular compromise of the extremity
Injury sssociated with deep soft tissue swelling
crush injury
Biconcave pattern seen with firm disc pushing on osteoporotic body
vertebral fracture
Have smooth surfaces. Total mass greater than expected for normal bone
accessory bones
bone snaps into two or more parts and moves so that the two ends are not lined up straight
displaced fracture
the bone is in many pieces
communiated fracture
bone cracks either part or all of the way through, but does move and maintains its proper alignment
undisplaced fracture
an incomplete fracture in which the bone is bent. This type occurs most often in children
greenstick
fracture at a right angle to the bone’s axis
transverse
fracture is one whose ends are driven into each other. This is commonly seen in arm fractures in children and is sometimes known as a buckle fracture
compacted fracture
bone fractures of the distal (lower) part of the shin bone (tibia) in toddlers. is undisplaced and has a spiral pattern
toddler’s fracture
On xray shows up as joint space narrowing with osteophytes, subchondral sclerosis, subcondral cysts
osteroarthritis
On xray shows up as joint space narrowing with bony erosions, soft tissue swelling, osteopenia about joint
rheumatoid arthritis
caused by injury or infection. represents fluid in the soft tissues. will eliminate contrast areas in muscles and have indistinct edges as well as increased vessel lines
swelling
Has defined edges as if forces normal tissues away or replaces them
mass
What organ malignancies tend to be lytic?
lung, thyroid, kidney
What organ malignancies tend to be lytic and blastic?
prostate and breast
Pathognomonic for Ewing’s sarcoma
onion skinning
Deep soft tissue swelling about the metaphysis. Bone destruction is a late development. Tends to spread irregularly. Avascular bone form sequestra
osteomyelitis
BONE LOOKS WASHED OUT, LOSES TRABECULAE, CORTEX THINS, DEFORM FORM PRESSURE
osteoporosis
