Organic Molecules Flashcards
Functional groups’ structure and charge or polarity.
Hydroxyl- OH; polar
Carbonyl- COH or CO; polar
Carbonyl- COOH; negative
Amino- NH2; positive
Sulfhydryl- SH; polar
Phosphate- PO4; negative
Methyl- CH; nonpolar
Isomer-
Molecules with same molecular formula but have different shapes.
Monomers and Polymers-
Monomers- type of small molecule.
Polymers- type of large molecule made up of many monomers.
Dehydration Synthesis Reaction-
Takes water out to build something. Uses monomers to make polymers.
Hydrolysis-
Breaks water to make monomers. Breaks polymers to make monomers.
Why’s carbon versatile in making bonds?
It has four stable covalent bonds.
Relationship between monomers and polymers.
They’re both the building blocks of life.
How can functional groups can determine the function of organic molecules?
By giving organic molecules distinctive properties and by making hydrocarbons, hydrophilic.
