Atoms Flashcards
What are protons charge, mass, location, and roles?
Charge: +1
Mass: Heavy
Location: In nucleus
Roles: Identity of an atom
What are neutrons charge, mass, location, and roles?
Charge: 0
Mass: Heavy
Location: In nucleus
Roles: Holds together the nucleus
What are electrons charge, mass, location, and roles?
Charge: -1
Mass: Virtually zero
Location: Outside of the nucleus
Roles: Responsible for reactivity
Isotope definition?
The same element or atom, with nuclear number.
8 protons, 8 neutrons, and 10 electrons
Atomic mass: 16
Element: Oxygen
Ion charge: -2
The element is oxygen, the atomic mass is 16, and the ion- charge (protons-electrons) is -2.
Protons: 8
Neutrons: 8
Electrons: 10
How can isotopes be useful in scientific research?
They have intriguing properties and one can fit a certain way while another can radioactive and used for a different way but be of the same element as the other one.
