Organic Analysis Flashcards
What is the test for alkene?
Add bromine water.
If double bond is present
Orange—-> colourless
What is the test to find a tertiary alcohol?
Add acidified dichromate
If tertiary alcohol is present the solution will remain orange.
How do you differentiate between a primary or secondary alcohol?
Add tollens’ reagent.
If aldehyde present a silver mirror will be produced. This shows the solution is a primary alcohol.
If a ketone is present the solution will remain the same. This shows the solution is a secondary alcohol.
How do we tests for a carboxylic acid?
Add sodium carbonate. If you see carbon dioxide produced in the form of gas bubbles a carboxylic acid is present.
When is a high resolution mass spectrometer used?
Some organic molecules have the same Mr so using the mass spectrometer isn’t helpful. Therefore a high resolution mass spectrometer is used
When would you use fragment analysis?
When they still have the same Mr after using the high resolution mass spectrometer
O-H from alcohol
Looks like a parabola in the range 3250-3550
O-H from an acid
Looks like a mountain from 2500-3000
