Oral cavity, salivary glands and oesophagus Flashcards
What does the oral cavity consist of
Stratified squamos epithelium
Salivary glands
Skeletal muscle fibres
Bone - Hard palate and teeth
Explain the structure of the lips
External - hair bearing skin, sebaceous glands and sweat ducts. Non-keratinizing stratified squamous epithelium
Internal - Lined by non-keratinizing stratified squamous epithelium, small clumps of salivary tissue
Transition point between external and internal is called the vermillion
Explain the structure of the cheeks
Lined by non-keritanizing stratified squamous epithelium
Minor salivary glands in submucosa with occasional sebaceous glands
Explain the structure of the tongue
Ventral surface: Non-keratinizing stratified squamous epithelium
Dorsal surface: Thick keratinizing stratified squamous epithelium. Separated by circumvallate papilla into anterior and posterior parts
Explain what is filiform and fungiform papilla found on the anterior part of the tongue
Filiform: Most numerous. Tall, narrow, pointed, keratinized at the tip
Fungiform: Scattered randomly among the filiform papillae, mushroom shape
What are taste buds
Sepcialized sensory organs in epithelium of tongue.
Pale staining spindle shaped cells in oval cluster on histology
Explain the structure of the teeth
Root: Embedded in the bone of the maxilla
Crown: Protrudes into the oral cavity
- Central pulp cavity: Central core
- Dentine - Produced by odontoblasts
- Enamel
- Cementum
- Periodontal ligament
Which cells are responsible for producing enamel
Ameloblasts
Explain what is cementum
Bone-like tissue covering the root of the tooth
Cementocytes resembles osteocytes
Cementoblasts lie on the surface or periodontal ligament and produce new cementum by appositional deposition
What is the function and structure of the periodontal ligament
Ligament securng tooth in bony alveolar socket
Composed of dense collagen and fibrocytes
What are the 3 main salivary glands
Submandibular
Parotid
Large sublingual
What is the structure of the submandibular glands
Ovoid shape either side of neck below mandible
Ducts open into floor of mouth
Mixed glands - serous elements predominating
What is the structure and location of the parotid glands?
Situated below an in front of the ears
Long ducts open into the oral cavity
Composed of entirely serous glands
What is the predominant cell and location of the sublingual glands
Located in the floor of the mouth
Composed prodominantly of mucous cells
Explain the following terms:
- Oesophagogastric junction
- Lamina propria
Where the oesophagus opens into the stomach
Loosely arranged collagen fibres and fibroblasts found under the mucus membranes
