What is necrotising enterocolitis
A
Bowel wall bacterial infection due to immature mucosal barrier especially in premature newborn

How does necrotising enterocolitis present
A
Sudden onset feeding intolerance
Abdominal distention
Bilious vomiting
Abdominal wall erythema or mass
Sepsis, acidosis, shock
Blood per rectum

How is necrotising enterocolitis diagnosed
A
AxR:
- Pneumatosis intestinalis
- Bowel wall thickening
- Portal venous gas
- Pneumoperitoneum

What is the treatment of necrotising enterocolitis
A
Conservative:
- NPO (nil per os)
- NGT
- Antibiotics
- TPN
Indications for surgery
- Necrotic bowel
- Perforation
