What is hypertrophic pylroic stenosis
It is a fibromuscular thickening of the pyloric muscle
Usually presents between 3-6weeks of age
What is the presentation of hypertrophic pyloric stenosis
Acute or gradual onset of projectile non-bilious vomiting shortly after feeding
Child is otherwise healthy: no signs of sepsis, raised intracranial pressure or other reasons for vimiting
Olive shaped tumour might be palpable in the right hypochondrium
What are the special investigations for hypertrophic pyloric stenosis
Sonar: Thickend pyloric muscle visible
Barium contrast: Big stomach, ELongated and narrow pyloric channel
Blood results: Hypokalaemia, hyponatraemic metabolic alkalosis
What is the treatment for hypertrophic pyloric stenosis
Rehydration
Correction of electrolyte imbalances
operation: Ramstedt pyloromyotomy
