Oral Cavity Flashcards
What are the two groups of tongue muscle?
intrinsic (within tongue) and extrinsic tongue muscles
What is the function of intrinsic tongue muscles
changing shape of tongue
What are the different intrinsic muscles of tongue?
transverse and vertical
superior longitudinal
inferior longitudinal
What is the function of extrinsic tongue muscles?
- change position of tongue within oral cavity (can’t change shape)
What are the extrinsic tongue muscles?
Palatoglossus (from top)
hypoglossus
styloglossus
genioglossus
What muscles lie along the floor of the mouth?
geniohyoid (most superior)
mylohyoid
digastric (most inferior)
What artery supplies tongue?
lingual artery (branch of external carotid)
What veins drains blood from tongue?
lingual veins (drain into internal jugular)
What nerve does the lingual nerve branch from?
posterior division of mandibular nerve (which is branch of trigeminal)
What sensation does the lingual nerve provide?
1) special/taste sensation to anterior 2/3 of tongue via chord tympani
2) general sensation (pain, temp, touch) to anterior 2/3 of tongue
What is the chords tympani?
branch of facial nerve
Where does the glossopharyngeal nerve descend to mouth?
- between internal carotid and external carotid
trauma to neck can therefore damage nerve but vasculature would be main concern
What sensation does the glossopharyngeal nerve provide?
special/taste and general sensation to posterior 1/3 tongue
What muscles does the hypoglossal nerve innervate?
Styloglossus
hypoglossus
genioglossus
+ intrinsic muscles of tongue
Where does the hypoglossal nerve descend to mouth?
- crosses internal and external carotid
- passes anterior to facial artery
