Oral Anatomy (muscles of mastication) Flashcards
What nerve innervates the muscles of mastication?
Trigeminal nerve (V3)
What are the muscles of Mastication?
Temporalis, Masseter, Medial pterygoid, lateral pterygoid
What is the origin of the temporalis muscle?
Temporal fossa
Where is the insertion of the temporalis muscle?
Coronoid process(and the mandible posterior to third molar)
What is the function of the temporalis muscle?
Retract and elevate the mandible.
What is the origin of the masseter muscle?
Zygomatic arch
Where is the insertion of the masseter muscle?
Outer surface of the mandible (angle of the mandible)
What s the function of the masseter muscle?
Elevate the mandible
What is the origin of the medial pterygoid muscle?
Medial surface of the latera pterygoid plate (sphenoid bone) and maxillary tuberosity
Where is the insertion of the medial pterygoid muscle?
Inner surface of the angle of the mandible
What is the function of the medial pterygoid muscle?
Elevate and protrude the mandible
What is the origin of the lateral pterygoid muscle?
Lateral surface of the lateral pterygoid plate(sphenoid bone) and infratemporal surface of the sphenoid bone
Where is the insertion of the lateral pterygoid muscle?
TMJ disc and neck of the mandibular condyle
What is the function of the lateral pterygoid muscle?
Protrude and or depress the mandible, and allow side to side shift of the mandible
What muscles have similar position and function?
Medial pterygoid and masseter
