What classify’s a ASA I patient?
A
- Normal healthy, no apparent disease, requires no dental management modifications.
- normal BP <120/80

What classify’s a ASA II
A
-Patient with mild systemic disease may or may not need dental management modifications

With ASA II what are some conditions?
A
- Well controlled NIDDM, asthma, epilepsy
- Stage I hypertension (140/90 - 159/99)
- Healthy pregnancy

What classify’s an ASA III?
A
- Patient with moderate-to-severe systemic disease, but not incapacitating, may have drug concerns and require special care
- Will most likely require dental management modifications

With ASA III what are some conditions?
A
- Well-controlled IDDM
- Stage II hypertension (160/100 or higher)
- CHF
- AIDS
- Chronic COPD

What classify’s an ASA IV?
A
- A patient with severe systemic disease that is incapacitating and life threatening
- Requires dental treatment modifications
- Often in a special facility

Treatment for ASA I patients
A
- Observe routine dental manaement
- Reevaluate in 6 months

Treatment for ASA II patients?
A
- Recheck BP before treatment for 3 consecutive visits; if reading exceeds guidelines consult MD
- Observe routine dental management
- Use stress-reduction protocol

Treatment for ASA III patients?
A
- Recheck BP in 5 minutes
- If the same consult MD before treatment
- Use stress reduction protocol

Treatment for ASA IV patients?
A
- Recheck B in 5 minutes
- Consult MD immediately
- DO NOT preform dental treatment until evaluation is corrected
- Preform emergency dental treatment with drugs (antibiotics for infection or analgesic for pain)
- Refer to hospital if therapy is indicated
