Fluorides, Antimicrobial, Clinical Dental Hygiene Flashcards
Infection Control:
What are examples of regulated bio-hazard waste?
Sharps, items that drip of saturated blood and/or saliva and hard and soft tissues removed from the patient.
What is PPE?
Personal Protective Equipment - Mask, glasses, gloves, jacket
What is an aerosol?
invisible airborne particles, they remain in the air for awhilee
What is spatter?
visible airborne particles of blood and/or saliva, they drop quickly to the floor, countertops, etc.
What is direct transmission?
occurs through direct touching
What is indirect transmission?
occurs through a contaminated object
When you disinfect what does it do? and what type does it not kill?
It kills or inactivates most pathogenic microbes (NOT SPORES).
There are 4 types of disinfectants, what are they?
Chlorine, Iodophors, Phenols, and Quaternary compounds
There is 1 type of disinfectant that shouldn’t be used on surfaces. What is it called? and Why?
Glutaraldehydes, because of the toxic effects of fumes and it’s also corrosive
Chlorine is a type of disifectant what are a couple qualities?
corrosive to metals, and strong odor
Iodophors are a type of disinfectant what is qualities?
can discolor some surfaces
Phenols are a type of disinfectant what is a quality. and what are the 2 tyes
There is water based or alcohol based. it can leave a film behind on surfaces
Quaternary compound is a type of disinfectant what are a couple qualities?
not corrosive, have a lower kill spectrum; limited efficacy
What level of disinfectant is used in a dental office? What type of organism must it be able to kill?
Intermediate, and be able to kill TB
What type of procedure kills all microbes including spores?
Sterilization with heat or chemicals
