Opthalmology Flashcards
What organism causes eye pain and redness after swimming in fresh water with lenses?
Acanthamoebic
Anacnthamoebic keratitis
What are signs of keratosis?
Red eye , photophobia and gritty sensation
What is acute (close) angle glaucome?
blockage of the anterior chamber angle by the peripheral iris. This results in a sudden increase in intraocular pressure.
Signs of acute (close) angle glaucome?
pupils are usually mid-dilated and non-reactive
High IOP
Hypermetropia (long-sightedness)
Causes of Bilateral grittiness
blepharitis
Chronic (open) angled glaucoma presents with..
peripheral vision
develop slowly over many years
decreased visual acuity
optic disc cupping
High IOP
Myopia (short- sightedness)
what are the symptoms of central retinal vein occlusion?
sudden painless loss of vision, severe retinal haemorrhages on fundoscopy
What is optic disc cupping?
High IOP
Optic nerve dilates
optic disc cups
What is glaucoma?
Build up of fluid/ pressure in the optic nerve
Close - chronic due to slow blockage
Open - acute due to sudden blockage
what are signs of age related macular degeneration (AMD)
- Central vision loss
- decreased vision
What investigation is done for wet AMD
Fluorescein angiography
What investigation is done for dry AMD
slit-lamp microscopy
what is treatment of Acute closed-angle glaucoma?
IV acetazolamide and timolol, pilocarpine, and apraclonidine eyedrops
What causes a lesion of the inferior optic radiations in the temporal lobe (Meyer’s loop)?
Superior Homonymous quadrantanopias
PITS (Parietal-Inferior, Temporal-Superior)
What causes a lesion of the superior optic radiations in the parietal lobe?
Inferior Homonymous quadrantanopias
PITS (Parietal-Inferior, Temporal-Superior)
