16
Q

what is the first phase of the maturation of a primordial folllicle?

A

preantral phase - intrafollicular paracrines such as cytokines and growht factors control oocyte and follicle developement

17
Q

what is the second phase of the maturation of a primordial follicle

A

antral phase - directed by FSH and LH. Activated follicles grow tremendouls and the primary oocyte in the dominant follicle resumes meiosis I.

18
Q

the female reproductive system produces _____ female gametes called ______

A

haploid

ova

19
Q

the female repreductive system RECEIVES _____ male gametes called _______

A

haploid

spermatozoa

20
Q

on the outer surface of an ovary there is a single layer of cuboidal epithelium or low columnar eipthlium. what is the name of this outer oayer of the ovary

A

germinal epitherlium

21
Q

in a mature ovary there is a substantial layer of dense connective tissue found just below the surface layer of germinal epitherlium called?

A

tunica albuginea

22
Q

what cells migrate from the wall of the yolk sac into indifferent gonad of the developing embryo during the 4th week of development

A

primordial germ cells

23
Q

in what phase does the primary oocytes arrest in around the 5th month of fetal development

A

prophase of meiosis I

24
Q

how long are the primary oocytes arrested in the prophase of meisos I

A

until ovulation

25
Q

in what part of the ovary contains a large number of primordial follicles

A

cortex

26
Q

what is the main hormone that helps primordial follicles develop into primary folllicles

A

follicle-stimulating hormone

27
Q

in the primary follicle what is the name of he layer that forms between the layer of granulosa cells and the developing oocyte

A

zona pellucida

28
Q

what hormone does the theca intena secrete?

A

androstendione

29
Q

the basic difference between spermatogensis and oogensis is that

A

one mature ovum is produced in oogensis and four mature sperm are produced in spermatogenesis

30
Q

the organ that makes estrogen and progesterone is the

A

ovary

31
Q

the surge in LH that occurs during the middle of the ovarian cycle triggers

A

ovulation

32
Q

which cell type is actually ovulated from the ovary

A

secondary oocyte

33
Q

which of the following hormones causes the oocyte to mature

A

FSH - stimulates the follicular cells and oocyte

34
Q

FOLLICLE DEVELOPMENT IN OVARY

A
  1. Primordial follicle - oocyte surrounded by single layer of squamous grnulosa cells
  2. Primary follicle - granulosa cells becomes enlarged and cuboital
  3. Secondary follicle - fluid-filled vesicles develop among the granulosa cells and a well-devleoped capsule or theca becomes apparant.
  4. mature follicle - fluid-filled vesicles form a single antrum. oocyte is located in the cumlus mass.
  5. during ovulation, the oocyte is released from the follicle, along with some surrounding granulosa cells of the cumulus mass called the corona radiata.
  6. granulosa cells dividie rapidly, enlarge and form yellow corpus luteum. when it degenerates it forms white corpus albicans.
