Obsessive-Compulsive and Related Disorder Flashcards
A plague of unwanted, recurrent obsessions or compulsions (or both) that significantly impact daily living
Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)
Recurrent and persistent thoughts, impulses, or images that are experienced, at some time during the disturbance, as intrusive and inappropriate and that cause marked anxiety or distress.
Obsessions
Repetitive behaviors or mental acts that the person feels driven to perform in response to an obsession, or according to the rules that must be applied rigidly
Compulsions
Previously known as dysmorphophobia (fear of being ugly), this refers to specifiable behaviors that describe having an “attitude” towards parts of oneself and/or one’s body and is often referred to as an imagined ugliness
Body dysmorphic disorder (BDD)
A diagnostic specifier of body dysmorphic disorder. People with this specifier may spend many hours in the gym working out in lieu of both social and occupational pursuits, often causing severe subjective distress and creating the potential for abuse of anabolic steroids or other body-building substances
Muscle dysmorphia
In which a person harbors delusional beliefs where one part of their body plays a part (ex; a person might think their eyes are grossly deformed)
Monohypochondriacal paranoia (delusional disorder, somatic type)
A disorder in which a person has difficulty discarding or parting with any possessions regardless their values because of sentimental attachment or they might come in handy someday
Hoarding disorder
Includes the name hair-pulling disorder and involves the recurrent pulling out (or twisting) of one’s own hair, resulting in hair loss
Trichotillomania (hair-pulling) disorder
Recurrent skin-picking, most commonly on the arms, face, and hands resulting in skin lesions
Excoriation (skin-picking) disorder
An intense anxiety that the penis will recede into the body (in females, the belief is about the vulva or nipples)
Koro
Intense fear of having a deformity (similar to body dysmorphic disorder)
Shubo-kyofu
An intense fear of having a foul body odor
Jikoshu-kyofu (olfactory reference syndrome)
