A state in which the person experiences unprompted intrusions into awareness and behavior accompanied by losses of continuity in these subjective experiences, or an inability to control or access mental functions such as amnesia
Dissociation
Entail a more complicated process wherein people forget who they are, where they are, and what they have been doing

In the regions of Thailand, this is seen as a common type of spirit possession
Phii Pob
A trance syndrome- common in Southeast Asia- characterized by a sudden outburst of unrestrained violent and aggressive behavior, usually of a homicidal nature, preceded by a period of anxious brooding and followed by exhaustion (mal de pelea in Puerto Rico and iich’aa among the Navajo)

A commonly noted response to acute stress in Latin American and Hispanic cultures

Primarily thought of as a Malay-Indonesian syndrome, is another set of trancelike symptoms that occur in response to startling stimuli
Latah
Characterized by the individual’s collapsing, sometimes without warning, in a trance. The person’s eyes are open, but the individual claims an inability to see. It can be preceded by feelings of dizziness or a sensation of swimming in the head. The person is not able to move, yet they are able to hear and understand what is going on around them. Caribbean groups or in the southern United States
Falling out (blacking out)
Occurs in Haitians. Here, too, the person falls to the ground in a trance- the difference is that they are not able to understand anything that is said or done around them
Indisposition
Sometimes called arctic hysteria, is a Polar Eskimo trance syndrome seen as an abrupt dissociative episode accompanied by extreme excitement of up to 30 minutes’ duration and frequently followed by convulsive seizures and coma lasting up to 12 hours (referred to as grisi siknis among the Miskito Indians of Central America)
Pibloktoq
Involves initial feelings of anxiousness, somatic complaints (such as weakness, dizziness, fear, anorexia, insomnia, or gastrointestinal problems) followed by dissociation and possession by ancestral spirits
Shin-byung
Another term that refers to the experience of spirits possessing an individual, is found in Ethiopia, Somalia, Egypt, Sudan, Iran, and other North African and Middle Eastern societies
Zar
Formerly known as multiple personality disorder (MPD), is considered the most severe of all the dissociative disorders because the most common and fundamental alteration includes the presence of more than one discrete identity
Dissociative identity disorder (DID)
Master gland that controls or influences all of the other endocrine glands that release a variety of hormones; this system includes the hypothalamus
Pituitary gland
Produces hormones to initiate or control stress reactions
Adrenal cortex
