Nutritional Assessment Flashcards
Enteral Nutritional Support
Via the digestive system, generally preferred
Parenteral Nutritional Support
Outside of digestive system, specialist training and equipment required.
Feeding tubes equation
(BW X 30) + 70
Why do we starve cats/dogs prior to sedation or GA
Reduces risk of aspiration pneumonia
What affects of chemical restraint might have on the digestive system?
They can drastically reduce gastrointestinal motility
What affects of being in a stressful enviroment have on the body?
-Release ‘fight or flight’ sympathetic hormones
-These slow GI motility
Post surgical nutritional considerations
-Highly palatable and easily digestible
-High biological value protein
Gastroenteritis
Inflammation of both the stomach and intestine, causing vomiting and diarrhoea
Gastroenteritis Considerations
-Treat dehydration along with electrolyte loss
-A complete, energy dense, ‘bland diet’
Refeeding Syndrome
When patients have been not eating for several days, care needs to be taken whilst feeding them for the first time.
Before feeding animal for first time in sverveal days…
-Assess the patients electrolyte levels
-feed them 1/3rd of their RER in 1st feed and 2/3rd in second feed
Gastric Dilation Volvulus
- Large, deep chested breed predisposed
-Never exercise predisposed breeds after eating
