non communicable diseases Flashcards
what are cardiovascular diseases
Cardiovascular diseases are diseases of the heart and blood vessels. and are non communicable
what does coronary arteries
to provide oxygen to the muscle cells of the heart and the oxygen is used in respiration to provide the energy for contraction
what happens in coronary heart disease
In coronary heart disease, layers of fatty material build up inside the coronary arteries which makes them narrow allowing less blood to flow through causing a lack of oxygen for the heart muscle
which could cause a heart attack in worst causes when the heart doesn’t have any oxygen
what are the 2 common treatments of coronary heart disease
Stains drugs which reduce the level of cholesterol in the blood slowing down the rate that fatty materials build up in the arteries.
using a stent a tube which can be inserted into the coronary artery to keep it open
what are the advantages and disadvantages of using satin
is is an effective drug
cause unwanted side effects e.g liver problems
what are the advantages and disadvantages of using stent
can allow the blood to flow normally
A stent will not prevent other regions of the coronary arteries from narrowing.
name another non communicable disease in the heart
heart valves not fully opening so the heart needs to pump extra heard to get the blood through which can cause the heart to enlarge
what happens if a patient has a leaky valve
they can feel weak and tired
what are the 2 types of valves they can be replaced by
When heart valves are faulty we can replace them either with a mechanical valve made of metal or a valve from an animal such as a pig.
what are the advantages and disadvantages of having a mechanical value
Mechanical valves can last a lifetime but they increase the risk of blood clots. Patients have to take anti clotting drugs.
what are the advantages and disadvantages of having a animal value
Valves from animals do not last as long and may need to be replaced. However, patients do not need to take drugs.
what is heart failure and what are the treatments
when the heart cant pump enough blood around the body
need a donated heart
what are the problem with having a donated heart
there are not enough donators available to treat every patient
the body might reject the heart and have to take drugs to stop the immune system from attacking it
what can patients do when they are waiting for a doner and what are some problems with them
they will have a temporary artificial heart
they can increase the risk of blood clotting and are not a long time solution
