active transport Flashcards
what is active transport
is the movement of dissolved molecules into or out of a cell through the cell membrane, from a region of lower concentration to a region of higher concentration.
what is the difference between diffusion and active transport
diffusion particles move down the concentration gradient doesn’t require energy to respire
particles are moved against the concentration gradient does require energy for respiration
give active transport examples in animals
small intestine cell lining. The sugar concentration in the lumen is less then the inside of the cell. The sugar cant diffuse but is carried by active transport and once inside they go into the blood stream
give an example of active transport example in plants
root hair cell transports ions such as magnesium into the plant from the soil (and need mag because they need to make chlorophyll in the leaves)
the concentration of ions in the soil is lower then the root hair cell so active transport is used to move them in the hair cell and then moves to the xylem
