infection and response communicable diseases and pathogens Flashcards
what is a comunicable disease and what are they sprad by
a diease that can be passed from person to person
spread by pathogens
what is a pathogen and give some examples
a microorganism which causes an infectious disease
virus/bacteria
protest/fungi
what does bacteria do (relating to comunicable diseases)
causes food poisoning
how does bacteria make us ill
once they are in the body bacteria reproduce very rapidly and releases harmful chemicals called toxins
what do toxins do
they damage tissue and make you feel ill
what is hiv and what can is cause
virus
cause aids
what is the difference between bacteria and viruses
bacteria can multiply on there own
viruses need a host cell to reproduce
what can happen to the cell if the virus multplyes too much
it damages the cell and can cause the cell to burst open and die
how can pathogens be spread
in the air through water droplets (e.g influenza)
through water (e.g Cholera)
direct contact between people (e.g HIV through needle sharing)
how can you reduce the spread of pathogens
practice of basic hygiene e.g washing hands with soap
providing people with clean drinking water
reduce direct contact between individuals e.g using a condom in sexual intercourse
in high infection diseases like Ebola they can stop the spread by isolating
vaccination
what is in the water in the uk which kills microbes
chlorine
