Cells Flashcards
what are the size and scale of cells
one um is 1000th of a mm or 0.001m
what is the difference between the eukaryotic and prokaryotic cells
eukaryotic cells have a cell membrane containing cytoplasm and in it there is a nucleus with dna in it
prokaryotic cells do not have a nucleus and are much smaller then a eukaryotic cell.
Name another difference between eukaryotic and prokaryotic cells
prokaryotic are much smaller then a eukaryotic cell and have a cell wall surrounding a cell membrane
they also have no nucleus instead a single loop of DNA
What is inside the cell membrane
It has a cytoplasm but no nucleus but a single loop of DNA and have one more small ring of DNA called the plasmids
What are the cell parts that are in both animal and plant are the ones that are only in plant
Both:
nucleus
cytoplasm
cell membrane
mitochondria
ribosomes
plants only:
chloroplasts
cell wall
permanent vacuole
name the structure and the function of the nucleus
contains chromosomes made of DNA
dna controls cell proceses e.g growth development
name the structure and the function of the cytoplasm
gel like substance mainly water proteins lipids and salts
suspends cell structures site of most cell reactions place where most cell expansion and growth occurs
name the structure and the function of the cell membrane
particular permeable
controls what goes into and out of the cell
name the structure and the function of the mitochondria
large internal surface area for reactions
where aerobic respiration takes place
name the structure and the function of the ribosomes
very small structures
where proteins made
name the structure and the function of the chloroplasts
contains chlorophyll pigment
traps light energy to carry out photosynthesis
name the structure and the function of the cell wall
makes cellulose
strengthens the cell
name the structure and the function of the permanent vacuole
made of membrane and filled with cell sap
stores nutrients and supports the cell
Name 3 types of specialized plant cells and the function/ability
phloem/ cells transport sugars made in leaves to the rest of the plant
xylem/ cells transport water and mineral ions through the plant
root hair cell/ cells absorb water and mineral ions from soil
Name 3 types of specialized animal cells
sperm/the function of sperm cells is to carry genetic material to the egg cell
muscle/the function of muscle cells is to produce movement
nerve/to carry electrial impulse around the body
