meiosis Flashcards
how many pairs of chromosomes are in the human cells
23
how many chromosomes do gametes have and how many single chromosomes do human gametes have
1 23 single chromosomes
where does meiosis take place
reproductive organs
male: testes
female:ovaries
what are the stages of meiosis
- all chromosomes are copied
- the cell now divides into 2
- now both cells divide 1 more time forming gametes
4.In the gametes, the chromosomes are now single not paired
- Meiosis produces four gametes from one original cell. (Each of these four gametes are genetically different from each other and has different alleles)
what does meiosis do to the original cells to the gametes
halves the number of chromosomes
what happens to the gametes during the fertilization
- when gametes join together
- after fertilization the cell now has the normal number of chromosomes
what does fertilisation do to the chromosomes
restores the full number of chromosomes
What happens after fertilization?
Now the new cell divides by mitosis, producing a clump of identical cells.
what happens when the embryo develops
the cells differentiate forming different cell types
what type of cells are formed when the embryo is developing
nerve cells and muscle cells
