Noel Method
This study randomly assigned teachers to one of three consultation follow-up conditions (brief weekly interviews, weekly interviews with commitment emphasis, and performance feedback) after they referred elementary school students for academic or behavioral concerns, and then measured the extent to which teachers implemented intervention plans and the resulting student behavior changes.
Noel Research Questions
To what extend would weekly follow up, social influence and performance feedback lead to differing levels of treatment implementation following consultation? What extent would condition assignment and level of treatment integrity be associated with student behavior change? Would teacher perceptions of intervention vary based on type of follow up?
Noel Results
When PFB was provided, the level of implementation was substantially superiror to the other two conditions (brief weekly, and committment emphasis). PFB was also associated with substantially superior outcomes to Weekly or CE. Yet, teacher perception of consultation was positive regardless of condition or student behavior change.
Noel Implications
The study’s findings imply that performance feedback is a superior follow-up strategy for ensuring teachers implement behavioral consultation treatment plans with high integrity, leading to better student outcomes, while highlighting the potential disconnect between positive teacher perceptions of the consultation process and actual treatment implementation and student behavior change.
