How is Nipah transmitted?
Fruit bats are the main host
Their excreta/saliva can contaminate date palm sap
This can either:
- date palm sap can directly infect humans
- date palm sap can directly infect pigs. Pigs can transmit to humans via excreta/ respiratory secretions. Can also occur with horses
- human-human transmission can occur, but it is unclear how transmissible it is

Bats

pigs/ horses are intermediate hosts
They can develop fever and respiratory disease
What are the clinical features of Nipah virus in humans?
fever
cough
SOB
GI symptoms
encephalitis
What is the incubation period?
3-14 days
consider if prevent within 14 days of travel to affected area
What is the mortality rate?
40-70% if severe symptoms develop
CFR is unclear as it is unknown how many asymtpomatic cotnacts there are
