Who is eligible for PreP?
HIV negative at baseline
MSM who are identified as being at elevated risk of HIV acquisition through condomless anal sex
MSM who have a sexual partner who is HIV positive. Unless they are known to have a viral load <200 for 6 months
Heterosexual men/women who are at risk from sexual partner who is HIV positive. Unless they are known to have a viral load <200 for 6 months
PWID - not generally recommended
What drugs are used as PreP?
Tenofovir and Emtricitabine
200mg/245mg
once daily
28 days
PreP is not recommend for PWID
When might this advice change?
Can be changed on case by case basis
or if there is an outbreak situation or other reasons that put them at risk of HIV acquisition
What are common dosage schedules for PreP?
Daily dosing - take for 7 days before having sex
On-demand dosing
2 tablets 24 hours before sex
1 tablet at time of event
1 tablet 24 hour after sex
What are common side effects of PreP?
Recipients should be advised of the possibility of transient nausea,
vomiting or headache and encouraged to manage this through the use of simple analgesics and anti-emetics
What testing should be performed prior and during PreP?
HIV testing every 3 months
If acute seroconversion suspected - needs a viral load to check is testing results may get complicated
STI screen evert 3 months - chlamydia/ gonorrhoea/ sypihlis
annual renal function check
