Baseline
What are the positives of CT?
Axial acquisition with 3D reconstruction
Excellent bony details
Fast
Compatible with emergency/ ICU equipment
What are the negatives of CT?
Poor soft tissue detail
Multiplanar reconstruction but no direct multiplanar acquisition
Radiation
What are the positives of MRI?
Excellent contrast/ soft tissue resolution
Excellent depiction of anatomy
Marrow and cord pathologies
Multiplanar capability
What are the negatives of MRI?
Less bony detail
Less spatial resolution
Not compatible with pacemakers and many implants
Not compatible with most ICU/ emergency equipment
Not as quick as CT
What will T1 MRI show?
Fat and the 4 Ms: Fat Methemoglobin (subacute haematoma) Mineral deposition (Ca, Mg, Mn) Melanin (melanoma) Mush (highly proteinaceous fluid)
What will a T2 MRI show?
Water:
Fluid collections, oedema, demyelination, gliosis, tumours
What colour is CSF in T1?
Black
What colour is CSF in T2?
White
