Neuroplasticity and Memory Flashcards
Activity dependent competition
Immature muscle has polyneuronal innervation…as you mature, a single motor axon will innervate a single muscle fiber…coordination
If there is receptor blocked, terminal will recede
Ocular dominance columns
Example of activity depdentent competiont
Crtical period of ocular dominance columns
Once critcial period has passed, losing one eye will not affec the ocular dominance columns
Trisynaptic pathway
Entorhinal cortex to dentate gyrus granule cells via perfornat pathwya
Granule cells to CA3 via mossy fibers
CA3 to CA1 via schaeffer collaterals
CA to subiculum
Subiculum to mammillary bodies via fornix or directyl to entorhinal cortex
Adult neurogenesis
After seizure, may grow back in a way that will have bad connections
Post-injury axon sprouting
Axons will synapse on other granule cells…this is not good
Synaptic reorgnization
After fiber sprouting, stimulus will have longer depolarization and increase # of APs
Removal of hippocampus
Anterograde amnesia
LTP process
Early lasts quick, but with more trains, late LTP will last much longer
Physiologic LTP
High frequency stimulus causes Ca to flow through NMDA channel…uses kinase to phosphorylate non-NMDA receptors to givbe postsynaptic maintencne
Presynpatic maintencne from retrograde messengers
With repeated trains
Ca influx recruits adenylyl cyclase which activates cAMP…can lead to new synapse formation, dnedrite growht or AMPA receptor traffic to membrane
LTD
Long term depression
Low frequnecy stimulation and phosphatase dependent
