neurophysiology of emotion 2, neural basis Flashcards
whats so important about physiological basis of emotions?
circuits that allow us to experience emotion are the same circuits that allow to identify those emotions in others
what is the mirror neuron system?
mirror neurons fire both when you do something and when you see someone else do something
important in emotional processing
what is innate fear
no experience with animals, associated with olfactory cues
what does the amygdala do
recognition of social cues due to fear
emorional conditioning in response to fear
memories
what are the two pathways for inputs to get to amygdala
how fast are they
- direct thalamo amygdaloid pathway to lateral nucleus of amygdala (rapid)
- indirect thalamo cortico amygdaloid pathway ( later )
lateral nucleus of thalamus does what?
where is it sent
integrates inputs ,
sends to basal and intercalcated nuclei for processing,
which is sent to central nucleus of thalamus
what happens to an individual whose amygdala is damaged
doesnt get conditioned to fear
what is anger mediated thru, what does it require?
mediated thru amygdala
needs dopamine acting at D2 receptors
what inhibits anger?
neocortex
ventromedial hypothalamic nuclei
septal nuclei
what is avoidance?
short term reward
long term consequence
what structures mediate avoidance?
lateral posterior hypothalamus
dorsal midbrain
entorhinal cortex
what structures mediate sadness, what happens?
lower sector of anterior cingulate cortex
activated when recalling sad events
what mediates disgust, what happens if its damaged?
insular cortex/putamen
social cues related to disgust
damage abolishes it (huntingtons)
what mediates surprise? what does it do
parahippocampal gyrus,
important in detecting novelty events
