Neuro Phys 2 Flashcards
What is a upper motor neuron?
Originate in the cerebral cortex or brain stem and terminate in the spinal cord
Affects groups of muscles
What is an lower motor neuron?
Receives upper motor impulses and connect the spinal cord and brain to the muscle fibres
Can affect 1 muscle
What are posterior nerve roots?
Sensory and Afferent
What are anterior nerve roots?
Motor and Efferent
What do anterior nerve roots deal with?
Efferent neutrons go through the ventral and finish in the effector muscles
What do posterior nerve roots deal with?
Impulses come through the dorsal horn through the posterior horn
Describe common symptoms of upper motor neurone lesions.
High tone, muscle weakness, increased reflex (+ve Babinski)
Describe common symptoms of lower motor neurone lesions.
Low tone, muscle weakness, lack of reflex
Upper motor neuron conditions
Stroke, MS, brain injury, Pd
Lower motor neuron conditions
GBS
