Managing Impairments Flashcards
What is hypotonia?
Flaccidity
What is hypertonia?
High tone
What is dystonia?
Fluctuating tone
What is a neural component?
Neural problems with nerves and spine
What is a non neural component?
If the muscle stays in the same place, it stiffens
Describe low tone
Reduced muscle tone, reduced reflexes, altered alignment of joints, reduced stability
Is spasticity an upper or lower motor neurone lesion?
Upper
What is clasp knife spasticity?
More resistance at the start
What is lead pipe rigidity?
Throughout range, resistance is constant
What is the difference between spasticity and rigidity?
Spasticity is found in one group of muscles (biceps) and the antagonist is relaxed (Stroke)
Rigidity is when they’re both stiff (Pd)
What is cogwheel rigidity?
Resistance then relax
Name 4 things we can do for high tone.
Stretching, splints, positioning, strengthening of antagonist
Name 6 things we can do for low tone.
Weight bear, muscle strengthening, rood (stimulation of muscles with brushes etc.), FES, orthotics, practice of movement
What medical procedure can we do for high tone?
Botox
What is ataxia?
Lack of coordination which to leads to a lot of other problems (usually cerebellar)
