Balance and Vestibular Flashcards
Definition of balance
Maintain the bodies COG over the BOS so they can resist destabilising influence of gravity
Four principles of balance?
LoG falls within BOS
Larger BOS
Lower COG
COG within BOS
What is sway?
The destabilising influence of gravity is overcome by periodic corrections by swaying
A test to test sway?
Rhombergs
3 systems of balance?
Vision, vestibular and proprioception
Name 4 movement strategies to help balance
Ankle, hip, stepping, grabbing
What is anticipatory feed forward?
Imaging an object is heavy when it is not, all muscles tense
Name some static balance tests.
Rhombergs, one legged stance, measurement of postural sway, standing on different supports with or without vision
Name some dynamic balance tests.
Timed up and go, functional reach test, bergs balance scale, marching on spot with arms outstretched
What is diadokokinesia?
Ability to perform quickly altering movements like pronation and supination
Name some vestibular symptoms
Dizziness, vertigo, imbalance, nausea, vomiting, sweating, hearing, difficulty walking in the dark, anxiety, panic
What is nystagmus?
Involuntary flickering eyes
