What is a stroke?
A rapidly developing clinical symptom of focal loss of cerebral function lasting longer than 24 hours
What is a TIA?
Transient ischemic attack (mini stroke)
Temporary blockage
Lasts less than 24 hours
Lack of 02 to the brain
High chance of stroke
Types of stroke?
Ischaemic and haemorrhage
What is ischaemic stroke?
Blockage to the brain/ lack of blood
What is haemorrhage stroke?
Bleed to the brain
What is thromboembolism stroke?
Blood clot travels up to the brain
Risk factors of stroke?
Age, hypertension, HD, smoking, TIA
What is TACS
Total anterior circulation syndrome
Is diagnosed when all 3 symptoms:
- Higher dysfunction (Speech, vision and consciousness)
- Vision loss on same side on both eyes
- Motor and sensory defects
What is PACS
Partial anterior circulation syndrome is diagnosed when 2/3 symtpoms but 1 is spared:
- Higher Dysfunction (Speech, vision and consciousness)
- Vision out of both eyes same side
- Motor and sensory defects
What is POCS
Posterior circulation syndrome
Usually to do with posterior vertebral artery
Visual and balance problems
