FES Flashcards
1
Q
What is FES?
A
Functional Electircal Stimulation
2
Q
Why do you need FES?
A
If your spinal cord has been damaged
3
Q
How does FES work?
A
It uses low-energy electrical pulses to artificially generate body movements in individuals who have been paralyzed due to injury to the CNS
4
Q
Does FES work in the CNS or PNS?
A
PNS
5
Q
Is FES used in upper or lower motor neurone legions?
A
Upper as the spinal cord has been damaged
6
Q
What conditions can use FES?
A
Stroke, MS, CP, Pd
7
Q
Explain how FES works for foot drop
A
- Foot switch detects heel rise
- Causes stimulation to the electrodes
- Produces dorsiflexion and eversion through swing
- Foot switch detects heel strike and turns off
8
Q
Who cannot use FES?
A
Motor neurone disease, pace makers, complete peripheral nerve damage, pain or ripped muscles
