Neuro Disease of Pigs Flashcards
Occurs in newborn piglets when the BG is <50
Hypoglycemia
What are clinical signs of hypoglycemia?
Convulsions, shivering, hypothermia, gait abnormalities
How do you dx pig hypoglycemia?
BG, empty stomach of dead pig
How do you treat hypoglycemia in a pig?
20mL/kg 5% glucose, warm them up
How do you control hypoglycemia in pigs?
Make sure sow is milking enough for litter
What age of pigs is affected by Streptococcal meningitis?
3-12wk
What is the causative agent of Streptococcal meningitis in pigs?
Strep suis
What are neuro clinical signs of Strep suis?
Tremors, blindness, ataxia, convulsions
What are non-neuro clinical signs of Strep suis?
Fever, anorexia, depression
How do you dx Streptococcal meningitis in pigs?
Culture CSF/meningeal swab
What will you see on necropsy of a pig with Streptococcal meningitis?
Suppurative meningitis
How do you treat Streptococcal meningitis?
Penicillin, enrofloxacin, ceftiofur (must be quick)
Water deprivation causes what?
Salt poisoning
What does water deprivation/too much salt cause in the brain?
Hyperosmolarity = swelling and edema of brain
What are clinical signs of salt poisoning>
Thirst, constipation, blindness, convulsions
How do you dx salt poisoning?
History and clinical signs
What will you see on histopath of a salt poisoning case?
Eosinophilic meningitis
What part of the brain must you submit to get a diagnosis for neuro conditions in a pig?
The entire brain
What causes edema disease in pigs?
E. coli
What toxins does E. coli assoc. w/edema disease have?
Shiga like toxin, F18 pili
How does the shiga like toxin of E. coli cause edema?
Vascular injury
What pigs are most commonly affected by E. coli edema disease?
1-3wk post-weaning
What are clinical signs of edema disease?
Sudden death, palpebral edema, ataxia, convulsion, scours
How do you diagnose edema disease?
Pure culture from SI or colon, detection of toxin
How do you prevent edema disease?
Vaccine pre-weaning (oral MLV)
