Hypoglycemia
What are clinical signs of hypoglycemia?
Convulsions, shivering, hypothermia, gait abnormalities
How do you dx pig hypoglycemia?
BG, empty stomach of dead pig
How do you treat hypoglycemia in a pig?
20mL/kg 5% glucose, warm them up
How do you control hypoglycemia in pigs?
Make sure sow is milking enough for litter
What age of pigs is affected by Streptococcal meningitis?
3-12wk
What is the causative agent of Streptococcal meningitis in pigs?
Strep suis
What are neuro clinical signs of Strep suis?
Tremors, blindness, ataxia, convulsions
What are non-neuro clinical signs of Strep suis?
Fever, anorexia, depression
How do you dx Streptococcal meningitis in pigs?
Culture CSF/meningeal swab
What will you see on necropsy of a pig with Streptococcal meningitis?
Suppurative meningitis
How do you treat Streptococcal meningitis?
Penicillin, enrofloxacin, ceftiofur (must be quick)
Water deprivation causes what?
Salt poisoning
What does water deprivation/too much salt cause in the brain?
Hyperosmolarity = swelling and edema of brain
What are clinical signs of salt poisoning>
Thirst, constipation, blindness, convulsions
