Equine Cervical Vertebral Malformation Flashcards
Which breeds are more commonly affected by CVM?
Thoroughbred and QTRhorse
What is a consistent pathologic finding in horses w/CVM?
Narrowing of the vertebral canal
What age of horses is typically affected by CVM?
Young (6mo-3yr)
Are clinical signs assoc. w/CVM asymmetric or symmetric?
Symmetric
What clinical signs do you see with CVM?
Symmetric ataxia, paresis, spacticity
Which set of limbs is more profoundly affected by CVM?
Usually worse in hindlimbs
What type of gait abnormalities will you see in the hindlimbs of a CVM horse?
Toe dragging and circumduction, wide-based stance
How do you dx CVM?
Cervical radiographs w/ or w/o myelography
What is the sagittal ratio?
Determined by measuring smallest sagittal diameter of vertebral canal and dividing by the width of the cranial aspect of the widest point of the vertebral body
What is the normal sagittal ratio?
> 52% (C4-6) to 56% (C7)
What is necessary for definitive ante-mortem dx of CVM?
Myelographic study
How do you surgically treat CVM?
Stabilize vertebrae/decompression but high risk
How do you medically treat CVM?
Stall rest, anti-inflammatories, dietary restriction
What is the prognosis for CVM?
Poor
What is the common name for CVM?
Wobbler syndrome
