Nerve Blocks in Horses Flashcards
What is the block location for a palmar digital block?
Around medial and palmar digital nerves between proximal sesamoid bones and foot cartilages
What areas are desensitized by a palmar digital block?
50-70% of palmar/plantar aspect of the foot
What joint is blocked with a palmar digital nerve block?
Coffin joint (distal interphalangeal) - except the proximodorsal region
What is the lowest nerve block you can do in a horse?
Palmar digital
What is the next block up from a palmar digital block in a horse?
Abaxial
What is the block location for an abaxial sesamoid block?
Around medial and lateral palmar digital nerves @ medial/lateral aspect of proximal sesamoid bones
What areas are desensitized by an abaxial sesamoid block?
Skin @ distal pastern, foot
What joints are blocked with an abaxial sesamoid block?
Pastern (proximal interphalangeal) and coffin joints
Which block is proximal to the abaxial sesamoid block?
Low 4-point
What is the block location for a low 4-point?
Dorsolateral/medial to DFT @ distal metacarpal bone proximal to fetlock joint + distal to end of each splint bone
Which nerves are blocked with a low 4-point?
Palmar nerves and palmar metacarpal nerves
What areas are desensitized by a low 4-point block?
Entire fetlock joint + everything distal to the joint
What is the most proximal distal limb block used in a horse?
High 4-point (subcarpal)
Which nerves are anesthetized with a high 4-point?
Palmar and palmar metacarpal nerves
What is the block location of a high 4-point?
Between suspensory lig and DDF just distal to carpus + between suspensory lig and splint bones @ palmar cortex of cannon bone
