Neuophys: Resting Potential Flashcards
Neuron function
-Highly irritable
-Responds to adequate stimulus by generating action potential (impulse)
Cell membrane
-Phospholipid bilayer (looks like stick figures)
-Membrane protein
-Fluid mosaic model
(ECF) = Out +++positive
(ICF) = In - - - Negative
Membrane Ion Channels
Proteins in the membrane = ion channels
-Leakage = always open
-Gated = open based on certain stimuli
Chemical Gradients
Ions move from high to low concentration
Electrical gradient
Ions move toward opposite electrical charge
Na+
Sodium always travels IN (SLIGHTLY permeable)
K+
Potassium is always OUT (permeable)
Polarized
More negatively charged inside than outside
Cl-
Always OUT (permeable)
-Doesn’t need channel
A-
Large anionic are negative protein (Impermeable)
Describe the pump (RMP)
-Requires energy
-3 Na, 2 K 2
-Prevents leakage to stay at -70v
