Connective Tissue Flashcards
What are the functions of connective tissues?
- Binds body tissues together
- Supports the body
- Provides protection
What are some characteristics of connective tissues?
-Some are vascularized & vascularized
-Extracellular matrix = non-living materials that surrounds living cells
Name cell, matrix, fiber, and function (vascularized?)
Bone (osseous tissue) cell = in lacunae
-Matrix = hard, made of calcium salts
-Fibers = collagen fibers (structure support)
-Function = used to protect & support body
(Well vascularized)
Name cell, matrix, fiber, and function (vascularized?)
Where is it
Hyaline Cartilage (cell = chondrocyte) most common cartilage!
-Matrix = rubbery
-Fibers = abundant collagen
-Function = support, reinforce, cushion, resists comprehensive, stress (in rib cage)
(Most common cartilage & is in the entire fetal skeleton)
(Avascular)
Name cell, matrix, fiber, and function (vascularized?)
Elastic cartilage (chondrocyte)
-Matrix = hairy feathers
-Fibers = many elastic (stretchy/elastic girl) fibers
-Function = provides elasticity
EX: supports the external ear
(Avascularized)
Name cell, matrix, fiber, and function (vascularized?)
Fibrocartilage (chondrocty)
-Matrix = densely packed with thick collagen fibers
-Fibers = collagen fibers
-Function = highly compressible (strong)
EX: Forms cushion like discs between vertebrae
(Avascularized)
Name cell, matrix, fiber, and function (vascularized?)
Areolar = Loose (fibroblast)
(Most widely distributed connective tissue)
-Matrix = under epithelial tissue and GROUND SUBSTANCE
-Fiber = all fiber types (reticular, collagen, elastic)
-Function = can soak up excess fluid
(Vascularized)
Name cell, matrix, fiber, and function (vascularized?)
Adipose (fat; keeps us warm and protected) (cell=adipocyte)
-Matrix = very reduced
-Function = provides reserve fuel, insulate, support and protect organs
-Found in subcutaneous (under/below)
Name cell, matrix, fiber, and function (vascularized?)
Blood (erythrocyte and white blood cells/lymphocyte)
-Matrix = fluid
-Fibers = visible during clotting
-Function = transport vehicle for materials (transports blood)
