Epithelium Tissues Flashcards
Epithelial Tissues are found in which areas?
Body coverings, Body linings, Glandular tissue
What are the four Epithelial Tissue Functions?
- Protection
- Absorption
- Filtration
- Secretion
Simple…
One layer
Stratified…
More than one layer
Shape of all cells…
Squamous = Flattened/Squashed
Cuboidal = Cube-Shaped
Columnar = Columnar-like
Which tissue?
Where is it?
What are its functions?
Simple Squamos
-Single layer of flat cells
-Usually forms membranes
-Lines body cavities (Lungs & Blood vessels)
(Filtration & Diffusion)
Which tissue?
Where is it?
What are its functions?
(Label)
Simple Cuboidal
-Single layer cube like cells
-Common in glands and their ducts = stuff that comes out
-Forms walls of kidney tubules
-In the Ovaries
(Secretion & Absorption)
Which tissue?
Where is it?
What are its functions?
(Label)
Simple Columnar
-Single layer of tall cells
-Often includes goblet cells = produces mucus
-Always has the white space between it
-Lines digestive tract
(Absorption & secretion)
What is it?
Where is it?
What are its functions?
Microvilli
-Projections of the cell membrane that INCREASES surface area for absorption
-Has hair like features
-Mainly in simple columnar
Which tissue?

(Label)
Pseudostratified
-Single layer, but some cells are shorter than others
-Often looks like a double cell layer
-Sometimes ciliated, such as in the respiratory (trachea)
(Absorption & secretion)(Goblet)
Which tissue?
Where is it?
What are its functions?
(Label)
Stratified Squamous
-Cells at the free edge are flattened
-Found as a protective covering where friction is common
-Located in, skin, mouth and esophagus(throat)…
Which tissue?
Where is it?
What are its functions?
(Label)
Transitional Epithelium
-Shape of cells depends upon the amount of stretching
-Lines organs of the urinary system
-Reacts to tension & stress
-Cells look all over the place (goes from cuboidal to squamous)
Which cell membrane Junction?
Tight Junctions
-Impermeable = not allowing passage to come through
Which cell membrane junction?
Gap Junctions
-Communicate
Which cell membrane junction?
Desmosomes = Anchor (chain/link)
