Nervous Tissue Flashcards
Characteristics of nervous tissue
Specialized for conducting electrical impulses.
Rapidly senses internal/external environments.
Processes info and controls responses.
Characteristics of central nervous system
Carries out sensory, motor, integration of data.
Includes brain and spinal cord
Characteristics of peripheral nervous system
Contains sensory receptors that process changes in internal/external environments.
Includes spinal and cranial nerves
What are the two types of neural cells?
Neurons and neuroglia (glial cells)
Neurons
Nerve cells that communicate with electrical impulses (action potentials)
Neuroglia (glial cells)
Supporting cells that repair, protect, and supply nutrients to neurons
What are the three parts of a neuron?
Cell body (soma), dendrites, axon
Characteristics of the cell body (soma)
Contains the nucleus and nucleolus
Characteristics of dendrites
Short branches extending from the cell body (soma).
Receives incoming signals
Characteristics of the axon
Long, thin extensions of the cell body.
Carries outgoing electrical signals (action potentials)
