CH 1 - The Human Organism Flashcards
What are the levels of structural organization?
Chemical or molecular Cellular Tissue Organ Organ system Organism
Homeostasis
The tendency toward internal balance
The existence of a stable internal environment
Homeostatic regulation
The adjustment of physiological systems to maintain homeostasis
Three components
- Receptor
- Control center
- Effector
Negative feedback loop
The response of the effector negates the stimulus and body is returned to homeostasis
Normal range achieved
Positive feedback loop
The response of the effector increases the change of the stimulus and speeds up the process
Normal range is lost
Set point
Physiological value around which the normal value fluctuates
An ideal number for a specific physiological process
What is the normal body temperature range?
36.7°C - 37.2°C which is 98.4°F - 98.9°F
Symptoms
Subjective changes
*Pain level
Signs
Objective, quantifiable changes
*Body temperature/fever
Prognosis
A prediction about the possible outcome from a specific disease
