Muscle Tissue Flashcards
Muscle tissue
Composed of cells that have the special ability to shorten or contract in order to produce movement of body parts.
Muscles have organelles and properties distinct from other cells
Striated
Muscle cells with a banded or striped appearance
Non-striated
Muscle cells without banded or striped appearance
Uninucleate
Having one nucleus
Multinucleate
Having multiple nuclei
What is the structure/characteristics of skeletal muscle?
Cells are long/cylindrical, multinucleate, striated
What is the function of skeletal muscle?
Moves the body, guards entrance/exit of digestive/respiratory/urinary tracts, generates heat, protects internal organs
Voluntarily controlled
Where is skeletal muscle located?
Skeletal muscle attached to bone or other connective tissue
What is the structure/characteristics of cardiac muscle?
Cells are short, cylindrical, branched, striated, uninucleate
Presence of intercalated discs
Intercalated disc
Connection between cardiac muscle cells that contain gap junctions.
Coordinates cardiac muscle cell contraction.
What is the function of cardiac muscle?
Circulates blood and maintains blood pressure
Involuntarily controlled
Where is cardiac muscle located?
Heart
What is the structure/characteristics of smooth muscle?
Cells are short, spindle-shaped, nonstriated, uninucleate
What are the functions of smooth muscle?
Moves food/urine/reproductive secretions, controlled diameter of respiratory passageways, regulates diameter of blood vessels, controls pupil dilation, contracts gland ducts
Involuntarily controlled
Where is smooth muscle located?
Walls of blood vessels, digestive/respiratory/urinary/reproductive organs
