Nervous System/Pain Meds Flashcards
Anti-parkinson, for tx of Parkinson’s EPS, including drug induced EPS. SE: anticholinergic S/S as dry mouth, blurred vision, urinary retention, constipation, confusion.
G: benztropine
B: Cogentin
Anti-parkinson agent. Acts to replace dopamine levels in CNS. SE: N&V, orthostatic HP, dark urine, phych S/S(Hallucinations, paranoid ideation) disrhythmias
G: levodopa/carbidopa
B: Sinemet
Anti-Alzheimer’s agent, cholinesterase inhibitor so increase Ach. SE: cholinergic S/S as N&V, diarrhea, dyspepsia, bronchoconstriction (caution w/ asthma and COPD pt.
G: donepezil
B: Aricept
Barbiturate anti-convulsant, sedative/hypnotic. Sched IV, tx of partial & generalized T-C seizures. ck bld levels: 15-40 mcg/mL, more often used with kids than adults SE: lethargy.
PHENobarbital
Anticonvulsant, esp for tonic-colonic & partial seizures. Also a cardiac antidysrhythmic. ck blood levels: 10-20 mcg/mL, do not abruptly DC. SE: pink urine, gingival hyperplasia, ataxia, nystagmus, Diplopia, agranulocytosis.
G: phenytoin
B: Dilantin
Benzodiazepine anticonvulsant, also muscle relaxer, sedative, anti anxiety. Sched IV, esp for tx of status epilepticus. SE: sedation, dizziness, nausea, dry mouth, urinary retention, constipation, rash. Do not abruptly DC.
G: diazepam
B: Valium
Skeletal muscle relaxant, antispasmodic agent. SE: drowsiness, urinary retention, constipation, lowers BP,rash, don’t abruptly DC
G: baclofen
B: Lioresal
Anti-inflammatory, immunosuppressant in large doses. SE: increase risk of infections, osteoporosis, skin thinning, hyperglycemia, GI ulcer, adrenal gland suppression. Slow wound healing.
G: predniSONE
B: Deltasone
NSAID, Cox1&Cox2 enzyme inhibitor, platelet aggregate inhibitor. SE: N&V, GI upset and bleed, tinnitus(toxicity sign) not for kids, risk for Reyes.
ASA, aspirin
NSAID, Cox1&Cox2 enzyme inhibitor. Causes less bleeding than ASA, but less aggregation inhibition so no MI protection.
G: Ibuprofen
B: Motrin, Advil
2nd generation NSAID, Cox2 inhibitor. SE: GI upset but less risk of GI bleed than Cox 1 inhibitors, rash, poss increase risk if MI, CVA
G: celecoxib
B: CeleBREX
NSAID, Cox1&Cox2 enzyme inhibitor. PO, IM, IV, low anti inflammatory effects, for short term acute pain tx, esp post op. SE: GI bleeding.
G: ketorolac
B: Toradol
Immunosuppressant, DMARD(TNF blocker) tx of RA, Crohns, UC, psoriasis. SE: bone marrow supp, increase risk of infection,(esp URI), neoplasm,HF, avoid if pt has MS.
G: etanercept
B: Enbrel
Analgesic for mild pain, antipyretic. SE: rash, hepatotoxicity with prolonged large doses or overdose.
G: acetaminophen
B: Tylenol, APAP
Opioid analgesic, tx of mod to severe pain. Sched II, SE: N&V, constipation, rash, lower Resp, Lower BP, sedation, opioid OD triad, pinpoint pupils, coma
morphine
