Uterine relaxant. (Tocolytic) Anti-convulsant R/T eclampsia. Tx of choice to treat preterm labor. SE: lethargy, muscle weakness, decreased resp.
Magnesium sulfate
Uterine relaxant. (Tocolytic) beta andrenergic agonist. Also anti-asthmatic. SE: weakness, sympathomimetic. Can–> tachycardia in mom and infant.
G: terbutaline
B: Brethine
Prostaglandin. Used for cervical ripening prior to inducing labor. SE: hypersensitivity, H/A, N&V, hypotension.
G: dinoprostone
B: Cervidil
Uterine stimulant (oxytocic) for induction of labor. Increases intracelluar Ca+ in uterine smooth muscle. SE: N&V, cardiac disrhythmias, increase BP, fetal bradycardia.
G: oxytocin
B: Pitocin
Uterine stimulant uses in Tx of postpartum bleeding. Avoid use in patient with hypertension. SE: N&V, dizziness, HA, increases BP
G: methylergonovine
B: Methergine
Oral contraceptive, contains both estrogen and progesterone. SE: risk of thromboembolic disorders ESP if hypertensive, smoker, increase risk of breast, uterine and ovarian cancer.
G: ethinyl estradiol/norethindrone
B: Ovcon 35
Injectable contraceptive. Every 3 mo dosing, given intramuscular. SE: rash, acne, irregular menstrual periods.
G: medroxyPROGESTERone
B: Depo-Provera
Estrogen. Used in hormone replacing therapy and to treat hormone sensitive tumors. In menopausal HRT progestin added to counteract hyperplasia on endometrium. SE: N&V. Risk of blood clots and some cancers.
G: estradiol
B: Estrace
Bone reabsorption inhibitor, calcium regulator. Used in tx of osteoporosis. SE: esophagitis.
G: alendronate sodium
B: Fosomax
Ovulation stimulant. May cause multiple births SE: nausea,abd bloating, breast engorgement
hot flashes.
G: clomiPHENE
B: Clomid
Immunizing agent against HPV, leading cause of cervical CA. Do not give in the presence of acute febrile condition. SE: hypersensitivity.
G: HPV vaccine
B: Gardasil
Opioid analgesic, may be used for labor pain mgt. not for prolonged use (2+days) due to metabolite nor meperidine can accumulate and cause increases risk of seizures.
G: meperidine
B: Demerol
Adrenal corticosteroid glucocorticoid , anti-inflammatory. SE: aggravation or masking of infections, malaise, weight gain, vertigo, H/A, HTN, nausea, and hypocalcemia. Na and fluid retention.
G: betamethasone
B: Celestone.
