NERVOUS SYSTEM: CEREBRUM Flashcards
LAYERS OF CEREBRUM
GRAY MATTER-outer most layer in cerebral cortex composed mostly of neuron cell bodies
WHITE MATTER- fibers tracks deep to gray matter
//corpus callous connects hemispheres
-basal nuclei- islands of gray matter buried within white matter
DIENCEPHALON
-sits on top of brain stem
-enclosed by cerebral hemispheres
MADE OF 3 PARTS
-thalamus
-hypothalamus
-epithalamus
THALAMUS
-surrounds 3rd ventricle
-relay station for sensory impulses
-transfers impulses to the correct part of the cortex for localization & interpretation
HYPOTHALAMUS
-under thalamus
-important autonomic nervous system center
//helps regulate body temperature
//controls water balance
//regulates metabolism
-important part of limbic system(emotions)
-pituitary gland is attaches to hypothalamus
EPITHALAMUS
-forms the roof of 3rd ventricle
-houses the pineal body (endocrine gland)
-includes choroid plexus-forms cerebrospinal fluid
BRAIN STEM
-attaches to spinal cord
PARTS OF BRAIN STEM
//midbrain
//pons
//medulla oblongata
MIDBRAINS
-mostly composed of tracts of nerve fibers
-has 2 bulging fibers tracts-cerebral peduncles
-has 4 rounded protrusions–corpiora quadrigemina
//reflex-centers for visions & hearing
PONS
-bulging center part of the brain stem
-mostly composed of fiber tracts
-includes nuclei- involved in the control of breathing
MEDULLA OBLONGATA
-lowest part of brain stem
-merges into spinal cord
-includes important fiber tracts
-contains important control
//heart rate control
//blood pressure regulation
//breathing
//swallowing
//vomiting
RETICULAR FORMATION
-diffuses mass of gray matter along brain stem
-involved in motor control of visceral organs
-veticular activating system (RAS) plays role in awake/sleep cycles & consciousness
CEREBELLUM
-2 hemispheres with convoluted surfaces
-provides involuntary coordination of body movements
