NERVOUS SYSTEM Flashcards
THE EYE & VISION
-70% of all sensory receptors are in the eyes
-each eye has over 1 million nerve fibers
-protection for the eye
THE REFLEX ARC
-reflex
//rapid, predictable, & involuntary response to a stimulus
-response to a stimulus
//occurs over pathways called reflex arcs
-reflex arc
//direct route from a sensory neurons, to inter neuron, to an effector
MYOLIN
-insulator that allows for faster impulses & action potential
TYPES OF REFLEXES & REGULATIONS
-somatic reflexes
//activation of skeletal muscles
-ex- hen you move your hand away from a hot stove
AUTONOMIC REFLEXES
-smooth muscle regulation
-heart & blood pressure regulation
-regulation of glands
-digestive system regulation
Patellar, or knee-jerk; reflex is an example of a to-neuron reflex arc
CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM(CNS)
-CNS develops from the embryonic neural tube
//neural tube becomes the brain & spinal cord
//opening of the neural tube becomes the ventricles
-4 chambers ithin the brain
-filled with cerebrospinal fluid
REGIONS OF THE BRAIN
-cerebral hemispheres (cerebrum)
-diencephalon
-brain stem
-cerebellum
CEREBRUM
-cerebrum hemisphere (CEREBRUM)
//paired (left & right) superior of the brain
//includes more than half the brain mass
//surface made of ridges(gyri) & grooves (sulci)
LOBES OF CEREBRUM
-fissures (deep grooves) divides the cerebrum into lobes
-surfaces loves of the cerebrum
//frontal lobe
//parietal lobe
//occipital lobe
//temporal love
SPECIALIZED AREAS OF CEREBRUM
primary somatic sensory area
-receives impulses from the body’s sensory receptors
-located in parietal lobe
PRIMARY MOTOR AREA
-sends impulses to skeletal muscles
-located in frontal lobe
Broca’s Area
-involved in ability to speak
CEREBRUM: special senses
-gustatory area (taste)
-visual area
-auditory area
-olfactory area
CEREBRUM: interpretations
-speech/language regions
-language comprehension
-general interpretation area
