Nervous System Flashcards
The nervous system has two parts. Name them
Central Nervous System and Peripheral Nervous System
What does the CNS consist of
Brain and spinal cord
What does the peripheral system include?
Nerves and ganglia
What does the CNS act as?
Central command for all communication and actions of the body
What is the purpose of the peripheral system?
Allows signals sent by the brain to reach their target destination in the body
Components of the Neuron
Axon terminal, myeline sheath, dendrite, cell body, axon
What kind of messages do sensory neurons send?
sensory information: touch, smell, and pain
What are the two subdivisions of motor nervous system?
Autonomic (involuntary) and somatic (voluntary)
Examples of Autonomic Nervous System
Heart rhythm, digestion, and breathing
Examples of the somatic nervous system
Deliberate actions: walking, throwing, typing
Involuntary Movement
Without intentional control
Voluntary movement
With intentional control
Central Nervous System
The part of the nervous system that consists of the brain and the spinal cord and acts as the command center for all communication and actions of the body
Peripheral Nervous System
The part of the nervous system that consists of all the nerves and ganglia that branch out from the brain and spinal cord to the rest of the body, allowing signals sent by the brain to reach their target destinations
Axon
A nerve fiber that carries a nerve impulse away from the neuron cell body
