Muscular System Flashcards
What are the three types of muscles
Skeletal, Cardiac, Smooth
What muscle attaches to the bone
Skeletal
What is the purpose of the skeletal muscle?
Movement of bones
What are some traits of the skeletal muscle
Striated
Is the skeletal muscle voluntary or involuntary?
Voluntary
Where is the cardiac muscle found?
In the heart
Is the cardiac muscle voluntary or involuntary?
involuntary
Where can smooth muscle be found?
Walls of hollow organs, stomach and intestines. The weakest of all muscle tissues
Is the smooth muscle involuntary or voluntary?
Voluntary
How many muscles are there in the body?
700 muscles
What are the two myofibrils that make up the muscle?
Actin (thin filaments) and myosin (thick filaments)
What happens when the muscle is relaxed?
myosin and actin filaments are not attached
What happens to the muscle when it contracts?
the filaments bind and are pulled together
What is the source of energy for contractions and relaxation of the muscles?
Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP)
Name the muscles in the body (superior)
Temporalis, Orbicularis Oculi, sternocleidomastoid, Trapezius, deltoid, pectoralis major, biceps, rectus abdominus, serratus anterior, external oblique, Gluteus Medius
Name the muscles (inferior)
Rectus femoris, vastus lateralis, vastus medialis, tibialis anterior, gastrocnemius, soleus
Name the muscles (superior posterior)
Trapezius, deltoid, rhomboid, triceps, latissimus dorsi
Name the muscle (inferior posterior)
Gluteus maximus, vastus lateralis, gracilis, biceps femoris, gastrocnemius, soleus
Muscular system
An integrated system in the body that is vital for controlling involuntary and voluntary movement
Tissue
A group of cells with similar structure that function together as a unit, but at a lower level than organs
Bone
Hard, calcified material that makes up the skeleton
Skin
The thin layer of tissue that covers the body
Skeletal Muscles
Muscles that attach to bones and are connected to and communicate with the central nervous system
Tendon
Tough connective tissue that attaches muscle to bone
Collagen
The primary structural protein of connective tissue
Sarcomere
Contracting unit of a muscle
Contraction
The process leading to shortening and/or development of tension in a muscle
