Male and Female Reproductive System Flashcards
What the purpose of the male reproductive system?
to generate male gametes (sperm) and deliver them to the female reproductive system
What components make up the male reproductive system?
Penis, vas deferens, urethra, prostate, seminal vesicles, testis, scrotum
What is the primary male reproductive organs
Testes
What kind of temperature is best for sperm to mature?
Lower temperature
What happens if the sperm grow under body or warmer temperatures?
they do not mature properly
What does the prostate and seminal vesicle produce?
fluids necessary for lubricating and nourishing the sperm
What is the purpose of the female reproductive system
generating female gametes (ova, or eggs), fertilization (conception), implantation (start of pregnancy), gestation (pregnancy), and parturition (birth)
What components make up the female reproductive system?
Ovaries, fallopian tubes, uterus, cervix, vagina, labia minora, labia majora, clitoris
What is a released egg that has been matured by a sperm
Zygote
What is the egg if it undergoes several divisions?
Blastocyst
Sperm
Male gametes
Penis
Organ for elimination of urine and sperm from the male body
Vas deferens
The duct in which sperm moves from a testicle to the urethra
Urethra
The duct that delivers urine from the urinary bladder to the outside of the body
Prostate
The gland in males that controls the release of urine and secretes a portion of semen that enhances motility and fertility of sperm
Testes
The male gonads. The organs that produce sperm
Scrotum
The pouch of skin that contains the testicles
Ova
Female gametes
Fertilization
The fusion of the egg and sperm
Fallopian Tubes
Tubes that carry eggs from the ovaries to the uterus
Uterus
The womb
Vagina
The canal that connects the external genitals to the cervix in the female
Hormone
A chemical messenger produced by a gland and transported by the bloodstream that regulates specific processes in the body
Follicle
Saclike structure that contains and allows for maturation of the female ovum (egg) within the ovary
Zygote
Fertilized egg with full set of genetic material resulting from merging of egg and sperm
